Pocitelj's history stretches back to 1383, when King Tvrtko I of Bosnia first built a fortress on this strategic location. Its purpose was to control access to the Neretva Valley. The Ottomans significantly enhanced the fortress, adding towers, walls, and other defensive structures. Pocitelj served as an important military stronghold and administrative center for centuries, witnessing numerous conflicts and power shifts. The fortress played a crucial role in defending the region against Venetian and Austro-Hungarian incursions.
